Burger Quest: The Newburgundian Bistro

Fall has arrived and today's trip, on Saturday, September 23, was cloudy, cool, and rainy. The destination was The Newburgundian Bistro, which, as the name suggests, is in Newberg. Its official address is 203 Villa Road. It is an easy location to find as it is just off Highway 99W, kitty corner to the Walgreens, across from The Human Bean, and next to Thai the Knot.

There is parking in front of the restaurant and, while it was busy, we got a spot right away. The venue is cozy with indoor and outdoor seating. We (wife and I) chose to sit outside and were seated immediately. The outside area is covered up and kept at a comfortable temperature.

As I mentioned, the venue is cozy. When you come through he front door, the dining area, the kitchen, and a counter which has croissants for sale are all right there. The smell from the kitchen is great. There are somewhere between 4 and 6 tables inside. A few of the tables seat more than four people and a few seat four. Outside, we were seated at a table for two and there were two other tables that looked like they could accommodate four.

The venue has a varied menu. My mission (and I chose to accept it) was to have the burger. My wife chose to have squash fritters, which is a vegetarian curry dish. She kindly allowed me a few bites and, while it's not my natural choice, it was very good. There is an extensive beer and wine selection. Appropriate for wine country, there is a greater selection of wine than beer.

There is only one burger on the menu. There is an option to add bacon and cheese to it, which I did. The burger comes on a potato bun and is garnished with tomato, pickles, lettuce, red onion, and aioli. As mentioned there are a number of beer offerings and I chose the North Coast 'Old Rasputin' Imperial Stout Nitro.

This beer is, no exaggeration, one of the best I have ever had. Ever. Anywhere. It is rich and creamy and has a deep flavor with strong hints of chocolate. The beer alone makes this trip worth it. The burger is next level amazing. The bacon and cheese are very flavorful and the patty is well seasoned. The toppings are high quality and fresh. The entire thing pops with flavor from the first bite to the last. I love burgers and this is an amazing burger. If you love burgers you will not be disappointed by this one. (As a side note, Mrs. Flaneur, who is not a burger aficionado, took a bite and agrees this burger is amazing). The burger comes with a generous side of fries (unbreaded) that are crispy and fresh.

Overall, I would give the following grades:

Burger: A+

Beer: A+

Fries: A

The burger, including add ons was $22. The beer was $9. With tip, this was a little under $37. It is a high price point, but in my opinion, worth the price.

Since tonight's sojourn involved Mrs. Flaneur and me, we ended up getting an appetizer. We talked about the frogs legs, but Mrs. Flanuer was not interested. I asked and they said the frog legs are not spicy, so I am assured they don't have much kick.* We ended up getting the beet salad. Now this might come as a shock to some, but I don't normally get beet salad. Notwithstanding that, I found it to be nice, light, and flavorful, especially with the dressing and the roasted hazelnuts that came with it. As an appetizer, this one is tough to beat.* We also had desert, creme brûlée, and coffee. I am a big fan of creme brûlée and this one was outstanding and the coffee did not disappoint. *All Dad jokes are intended and hilarious. You're welcome.
