Burger Quest: The Blind Pig

Yesterday, November 11, we (Mrs. Flaneur and I) went to try out the Blind Pig, which is located at 325 W. Main St. in Carlton. It is next to Carlton Corners and just down the street and across from the post office.

There is no parking lot, but there is never a shortage of parking available in Carlton, so street parking that is close by is easy to find. Upon entry, the space is open and dominated by dark colors. There is an analog clock on the back wall near a large wine rack. There is some piping displayed on the right wall when you come in. The lighting fixtures have an art deco look to them and the confluence of all the decorative elements is something that I am going to call "art deco steam punk," which may or may not be a real style of decor.

When we came in we were greeted and seated immediately. The service is friendly and fast.

Their menu is smaller than some other places, but all of the selections look great. There is a good selection of wines as well as a broad selection of different beers on tap, including some that rotate out seasonally.

We chose to have the Renegade Burger, which is very rich and savory. It consists of a 7 oz patty, truffle aioli, white cheddar, balsamic onions, and greens. The balsamic onions give the burger a little bit of a flavor kick and stand in nice contrast to the truffle aioli. The burger comes on a brioche bun. The buttery taste of the bun goes well with the rest of the ingredients.

The fries are fresh cut and are unbuttered. They came to us as a nice assortment of textures. There are three options for the fries: plain, parmesan and garlic, and truffle. We chose truffle. The added favor is done in just the right amount and does not detract from or overwhelm what are some truly great fries.

For the beer, I had the Dunkel Zoiglhaus red ale, the current seasonal offering, which was unremarkably average.

I split this with Mrs. Flaneur who, as I have mentioned, does not have the same love of burgers that I do, and she agreed that this is a fantastic burger. Just excellent.

Because we spit the burger, we also had an appetizer. We had the baked brie, which comes with apple butter and crostini (extremely crunchy little toasts). Normally baked brie tends to be a little on the bland side, but this was seasoned with chives and pepper and comes out in a little cast iron pan. We both enjoyed this. As I mentioned, this venue has a good wine selection and it is easy to envision enjoying a glass together with this appetizer.

Overall I would give the following grades:

Burger: A/A+

Fries: A/A+

Beer: C+/B

For the beverage, burger, and appetizer, plus tip it came to $48.
