Burger Quest: Lumpy's Tavern

The second stop in Burger Quest is Lumpy's Tavern, which is right on Highway 99 in Dundee. The official address is 975 OR-99W in Dundee. Headed north on 99W it is to the right and is across from the Big Bold Reds tasking room.

I went at about 12:30 p.m. on, Saturday, September 2. It is easy to get to and I had no problem getting a great parking spot right by the door.

Upon entry there are three pool tables by the door, to the right are tables and a karaoke setup, to the left is the bar, and against the far wall is a set of about six video lottery terminals. The walls are decorated with an assortment of neon signs and metal signs with irreverent humor. There is a flat screen TV above the bar and there was a college football game on between Oregon State and Portland State.

The game led to some friendly banter between the patrons and more people arrived during the time I was there. There seem to be a good number of regulars and the venue and the people all have a relaxed and unpretentious vibe.

When I took a seat at the bar, I became the third person at the bar (aside from the bartender). I was asked what I wanted to drink, and got a menu when I asked for one (there is food available and the menu features standard bar fare, but it is not necessarily the focus as I was the only person who had food during the time I spent there).

As before, I got a bacon cheese burger. It came out quickly. Temperature was just right. It was accompanied with fries that had some coating on them (I think it was a panko dusting), which lead to consistent light and crispy flavorful fries. The burger had a thick patty that had a good quality. The bacon was full sized and crispy. The lettuce, tomato, and pickles were all fresh. The only condiment on the burger was mayo. It came on a sesame seed bun. The burger and fries combo was $16.50 and was solid offering, but the burger could benefit from a condiment with a bit more kick than mayo.

I ended up having two beers: a can of Rainier and whatever the on-tap lager offering was. The lager was crisp and enjoyable and a good compliment to the food. The two of them together came to $12 and I am unsure of the breakdown.

Overall, I would give the following grades:

Burger: B-

Fries: B+

Beer: B- The total cost for the burger, fries, two beers, and tip was $32.
