It is Sunday, November 26, the first Sunday after Thanksgiving. There was no sortage of food or leftovers in the wake of the holiday. This resulted in me waiting until today to head out and sample this week's burger at Humble Spirit, which is located at 411 3rd Street in downtown McMinnville.
As with the other downtown venues that I have gone to during Burger Quest, there was only street parking available. I have never had a hard time finding reasonable parking downtown and today, a lazy fall Sunday, I got rockstar parking right in front of the door. Seating was immediate and the service expereince was excellent.
Noble Spirit fronts onto 3rd Street. Entry is into a small room to the right of the main dining room. There are large windows facing the street and ample internal lighting. The walls are brick and the color scheme is an overall soft yellow brown. The design choices create a space that is bright and relaxed.
The restaurant opens for brunch and then seems to close and reopen for dinner later in the day. I went during brunch and had the double cheeseburger which appears as a brunch option. (It is the only burger option on the menu). There is a choice of sides: fries or greens. I opted for fries. Thankfully, they had a non-IPA on tap, and I opted for the Foreland, Fiest Beir, Oktoberfest.
The burger is vey good. It comes with two smash style patties, so while this is a "double" the total amount of meat is comparable to more traditional, thicker burgers. It is topped with provolone, grilled onion, pickles, and a "fancy sauce." The patties are locally sources and fresh. The patties are thinner smash patties. They are well done and the have a full flavor and texture. The accompanying grilled onion, pickle, cheese, and sauce combine to create a savory and excellent overall flavor.
The fries are simple, straight cut, and lightly salted. These fries are a great example of how sticking to the basics and focusing on quality can yield superior results.
The beer was mellow and smooth and was a perfect pairing for the burger. Our server said it was selling well (it has only been around since October) and it is easy to understand why.
Overall, I would give the following grades:
Burger: A/A+
Fries: A/A+
Beer: A/A+
The burger was $21 and the beer was $9. A higher than average price point, but worth it in terms of quality and flavor. I anticipate returing to this restaurant often now that I have discovered it.
