Yesterday, December 2, we went to Alf's. It was at Mrs. Flaneur's suggestion as she wanted to try it and we had a 6 year old and an 18 month old with us, it made sense to me.
I think everyone knows where Alf's is, but if you don't, it is located at 1250 SW Baker Street (AKA 99W) in McMinnville. It is easy to miss. As you head south out of town, it is on the left. If you get to the turn off for the Lowe's you've gone too far! Turn back.
Anyway... Alf's is a different type of venue than I have visited for this project. When you walk in, it has the feel of the old Dairy Queen. Even the lettering on the menu boards is the same, and that sure brought back a feeling of nostalgia for teenaged summertime dating. The decor is kitschy 50s stuff and it is just fun.
Inside, there are a small number of tables and booths. There is a lot of covered outdoor seating and I think that makes this more ideally visited in the summer. Regardless, the service was fast and friendly.
I had the special, which was a 1/4 pound burger, fries, and a medium drink (no beer here, so it was Diet Pepsi). It comes with shredded lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. I added bacon and cheese.
This was a solid fast food burger. It is easily better than anything you'd get a McD's or BK or Wendy's. The fries were great. There is a dispenser for ketchup and fry sauce, so regardless of your preference, they've got you covered. I cannot honestly say that this was the best burger, but I can say that it was pretty darn good at a pretty darn good price. I believe in supporting local small business, so I will be back in the summer when I can enjoy it at one of the outside tables.
I would give the following grades:
Burger: B
Fries: B+
Beer: N/A (they do have shakes, and while I did not have one of them, the kids loved them)
